Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Girl Ray, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Art School Girlfriend, Diner Party and Speedy Wunderground Dubs.

A few pop sparklers to welcome the first new week of August ‘23.

Hello, Friends.

Prestige is the all-singing, all-dancing, high-pop production return of Girl Ray. Produced by Ben H. Allen alongside the band’s Poppy Hankin, it really does sound lush. A sort of glossy radio pop album that retains the homespun charm of their early releases. A shimmering contemporary take on eighties NRG. Record of the Week and really good fun.

+ Pressed on limited ‘Mimosa Yellow’ colour vinyl.

Fuzz Club go back to Hollywood Palladium in 2018 this week for a live album from Scottish alt rock icons The Jesus and Mary Chain. Sunset 666 (Live at Hollywood Palladium) was recorded when the band played support to Nine Inch Nails, with seventeen tracks from across their storied career. Features Isobel Campbell guesting on a couple of tracks and beautifully balances out the darkness of JAMC in full flow.

+ Available on limited double Red vinyl
+ We have a limited double test pressing that we’re going to randomly pop into one of today's orders too.

Polly Mackey returns this week with her second album under the Art School Girlfriend moniker on Fiction Records. Soft Landing is really texture-filled music and highlights her production skills. Stirring pop with plenty of crackling euphoria.

The Dinner Party LP - Enigmatic Society - that we said was out a few weeks ago is now actually here and out. The supergroup of Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder really work through the gears and the guest vocals keep it ever moving.

Odyssey
is another blink and you’ll miss it 7” from Beck (what is he up to yeah?), this time in collaboration with French pop rockers Phoenix.

Lastly today, as part of their tenth birthday celebrations, Speedy Wunderground have released a very limited 10 x 7” box set with twenty dub remixes from their now iconic singles series. Heavyweight rib-ticklers that include reworkings of tracks by: Archie Bronson Outfit, Toy, Natasha Khan, Scottibrains, JUCE!, Kae Tempest, Loyle Carner, Telegram, Teleman, Peluché, Melt Yourself Down, DEWEY, black midi, Black Country, New Road, All We Are, Alex Kapranos, Tiña, Pynch, PVA, Brodka, moa moa, deep tan and Honeyglaze.

Really wonderful things, these. Shipping out early/mid next week.

A cast of excellent reissues on the wall as of tomorrow morning too, with; Wilco, Rival Consoles, The Black Dog, Lee Morgan, Duke Pearson, The Fall and double Ride.
