Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Squid, Decisive Pink, King Krule, Christine and the Queens, Jayda G, This is The Kit and Keaton Henson.

Last week was stacked, this week is even more so. June keeps giving; the newness is excellent.

Hello, Friends.

Our Record of the Week is O Monolith, the jacked up return of Squid. If you loved the first record (and its preceding EPs), you’ll love this. If you don’t know them yet, you'll still love this! It is full of curious and bright eyed sonic trips and changes of pace. It’s hugely ambitious and has such great energy.

+ Available on exclusive Transparent Blue colour vinyl.
+ We also have stickers!

Decisive Pink
is the new collaborative project from Kate NV and Angel Deradoorian, and it is an absolute pop dream! Ticket to Fame just bubbles from start to stop; breakneck speeds, pops and clicks, squelching beats and two amazing voices that sound like something from anywhere between 1981 and 2029! It really is ludicrously good fun.

Drift Records

Time Ain't Accidental is the new LP from LA Based, Texan musician Jess Williamson. Her voice is absolutely sublime; rich and effortlessly warm. Personal but relatable, she transcends generations of country vocals; this really is a special one.

+ Available on exclusive Hot Pink colour vinyl.

PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE is the hugely ambitious new set from avant-pop star Christine and the Queens. Although full of driving synths, it’s not without plenty of space and etherials. His production is hugely impressive.

+ Available as single or triple CD/LP editions.
+ We have some very limited Chris-designed tea towels to give away!

Kate Stables returns in absolutely masterful form this week as This is The Kit with the new Careful Of Your Keepers LP. There are loads of introspective moments, but the way the rich sonics all weave together just creates such an amazing flow. It was produced with Gruff Rhys and he has really added a warmth and focus without detracting from the band’s dynamic. This one really is a proper belter.

+ Available on limited Dark Green colour vinyl.

Space Heavy is the fourth LP from Archy Marshall under his King Krule alias. The production is genuinely masterful, weird and epic sonics that wrap around the knotty nuisances of each unexpected change in direction. His gnarled baritone still rattles through, but the way he sings some lines so sweetly is a discombobulating treat. Really engaging, really good.

+ Available on Exclusive Clear colour vinyl
.

The inimitable Jayda G returns on Ninja Tune this week with Guy. Co-produced with Jack Peñate, it really squelches; House, Disco, RnB and Soul tones with loads of pop sensibility.

We finally have a physical pressing of Freddie Gibbs’s $oul $old $eparately LP. Originally released late last September, his technique is so punchy and the guest appearances/production from Kaytranada, James Blake, and DJ Paul really give this a great flow. One of rap’s most engaging voices

+ Available as an exclusive Yellow colour vinyl pressing. That edition also includes a 7” single-sided black Flexi disc.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
return with the poignant new Weathervanes LP. Smooth and pastoral country with some racing euphoria. Good energy.

+ Available on exclusive 'Natural Colour' vinyl.

JOY’ALL is the swaggering new fifth solo LP from Jenny Lewis. Written in daily instalments throughout the pandemic, it is really funny and secures her space as a contemporary troubadour of the highest order.

+ Available on limited Green colour vinyl.

Heaven Hunters is the debut LP from composer, pianist, singer and producer Emile Mosseri. He’s a hugely experienced soundtrack artist, but this first solo outing really plays to his storytelling. The production from The Haxan Cloak is really fantastic, it’s quite gripping stuff.

The Toads

Also in this wildly full week;

Social Lubrication is the pummeling self-produced third album from Dream Wife. Brighton’s Public Body release their debut LP, Big Mess on Fat Cat. It really rattles along, irreverent and funny with killer drive. Keaton Henson returns with House Party, a full and pop-rich new LP. Another really great vocal in this week of really great vocals. Heaven Is A Junkyard is the swooning return to the Youth Lagoon moniker from Trevor Powers. It has such a lightness of touch, lovely. James celebrate their 40th anniversary with Opened By The Wonderful, a collection of some of their most loved and rare tracks, re-imagined with a 22 piece orchestra and 8 piece choir. Janelle Monáe returns with the high-pop The Age Of Pleasure. Great fun throughout and the production really shimmers. Sign us up!

Lastly this week; Upset The Rhythm release In The Wilderness from Melbourne post-punks The Toads. Messy and raucous, it’s really great fun and totally going to be a most played record for us over here.

We’re pretty sure that the boxes that have just landed contain some/most of the SAULT records… we’ll BRB.
