Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Ty Segall, TRAAMS, HighSchool, Jack White, Jamie T, ODESZA and Bartees Strange.

Ending this big big week with a set of new new releases.

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week is Hello, Hi, the absolutely glorious return of Ty Segall I mean, how could it be anything else? His fourteenth (or so) studio LP under his own name (not including collaborations with Mikal Cronin and White Fence, or as part of GØGGS, Wasted Shirt, The C.I.A and the mighty Fuzz) is an absolute gem of an acoustic trip through the Californian valleys. There is such a lush haze to the album, with acoustic guitars and vocals humming beautifully which really sets up for a proper kick when he stamps on that fuzzy distortion pedal. He's never not fantastic, but this album is an absolute peach. Album closer (kinda) ‘Saturday Pt.2’ contains some of the finest four minutes of music he's produced to date. Very highly recommended.

It's another double Dinked week on the racks at Drift.

personal best is the absolutely pounding return of TRAAMS after a seven year absence. Such a great drive, with kosmische via drum machines and dark layers of guitars. Also features performances by Liza Violet (Menace Beach), Soffie Viemose (Lowly) and Joe Casey (Protomartyr) to keep the tones changing. We all love this.

+ Dinked Edition 191 / Blue vinyl / 4 post cards / 24 x 12" foldout poster / Numbered of 500.

Forever at Last is one of the year's most exciting debuts, the dark and alluring goth-pop of HighSchool. They create such a mood; wistful and pensive with clicking dance beats and jolting guitars. They manage to sound richly retro and weirdly futuristic, a really great young band.

+ Dinked Edition 173 / Clear vinyl / Numbered & signed print / Die-cut sticker / Numbered of 300.

Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive

Jack White, the main (Third) Man releases his fifth solo album just three months after his fourth. Entering Heaven Alive contains - stylistically - some of the most straight-forward songs of his career, relatable and accessible with White finding space in the art-pop. He still rips a few solos, but this acoustic-led set really shows what an interesting and ever more unpredictable songwriter he is.

+ Available on Indie Exclusive Detroit Denim colour vinyl.
+ Join us for The Metamoracle...

Another of the week's big returns is The Theory of WhateverJamie T's first album in six years. As wry and gloriously observed as his earlier work, he very much sounds like himself, just older and more comfortable. A great writer.

+ Available on Indie Exclusive Transparent Green or Standard White colour vinyl.
+ Come and see us instore for a free Jamie T tote bag with all purchases.

Breaking The Fall is the solo debut from Matt James, former drummer and co-songwriter in Gene. It is an intimate set - produced with Stephen Street - that pulls in lots of influences to keep to bubbling along.

+ Pressed on 180g purple vinyl and featuring an exclusive print signed by Matt James, strictly limited to 555 copies worldwide.

The Last Goodbye is the hugely ambitious new set from duo ODESZA. Euphoric and lifting with some really immersive vignettes.

+ Available on double Opaque Mint Vinyl with a 12" poster.

Jamie T - The Theory of Whatever

Also this week;

Birds In The Ceiling is the new solo LP from Oklahoma songwriter John Moreland and includes a limited Opaque Blue colour vinyl pressing. Misadventures of Doomscroller is the massive and quite psychedelic new LP from LA rock band Dawes. Zooey Deschanel and M.Ward reunite as She & Him for Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson. Includes an exclusive 'Lemonade Translucent' colour vinyl edition. Live Studio 4 finds Bartees Strange and his band recording an electric set of album tracks and other songs from his catalogue. Pressed in a hugely impressive Orange, Brown and Yellow "twister" colour vinyl pressing. Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough's original score to The Northman lands via Sacred Bones Records. Really does make the intensity of the film. Brighton pop-pers The Kooks release 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark, a toe-tapping set with some interesting sonic directions.

Lastly today, South London five piece The Queen's Head release the limited Your God Owes You Money 7" on Speedy Wunderground. As ever, don't sleep on these, very good and very limited. The label's Vol. 5 compilation lands next week and producer Dan Carey has signed us a test pressing, Keep an eye on our socials for news on that!
