Various Artists; Disques Debs International, PUNK 45 and Cold Heat Heavy Funk Rarities.

Heavy Funk, heavier Punk and soothing tones from Guadeloupe.

We’ve singled out a little selection of compilations that have been reissued this week as they are - all three - getting us going and we didn’t want you missing them.

Firstly, Strut revisit Disques Debs International Volume One, the first ever compilation series to access the archives of one of the greatest of all French Caribbean labels. Set up by the late Henri Debs during the late ‘50s, the label has enjoyed a succulent run for over fifty years, covering styles varying from early biguine and bolero to zouk and reggae. Hypnotic beats and gently euphoric island Jazz, this is such an easy record to fall for.

It was originally released in 2018 and we’re rather hoping that Strut will be reissing 2020’s (also excellent) volume two shortly.

We have another absolute blazer back in press after a long time out of the racks, with Now Again Records presenting Cold Heat: Heavy Funk Rarities 1968-1974. Curated by the label’s founder and president Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, ‘Cold Heat’ compiles funk and soul cuts with that harder edge. So much groove and when it gets fuzzy, something special happens! As they explain, each track “burns with a brightness that's undeniable.”

Repressed for a special 10th Anniversary edition a few weeks back for RSD24, Soul Jazz Records went back into the PUNK45 vaults for Kill the Hippies! Kill Yourself! The American Nation Destroys Its Young. The first release in the iconic series, the album charts the rise of underground punk across the United States of America in the years 1973-1980. Fully remastered and relicensed with new tracks exclusively for this edition from Iggy and The Stooges, Nervous Eaters, Angry Samoans and more!

Stick this one on loud for that full, chest-pounding vibe. Great stuff.
