Record of the Month; Whitney - Light Upon The Lake

June's record of the month is Whitney's Light Upon The Lake via Secretly Canadian. Produced with Foxygen frontman and longtime friend Jonathan Rado, it's a quite wonderful album this one, plus the indie shop version is pressed on translucent blue vinyl... don't miss the boat friends.

Whitney make casually melancholic music that combines the wounded drawl of Townes Van Zandt, the rambunctious energy of Jim Ford, the stoned affability of Bobby Charles, the American otherworldliness of The Band, and the slack groove of early Pavement. In part they are formed from the ashes of the bright burning Smith Westerns, their debut marks the culmination of a short, but incredibly intense, creative period for the band.

Talking specific about the album opening track, our friend Jeff Barrett of Heavenly Recordings wrote in the Guardian;

"This is gorgeous, such a pretty song. I love everything about this group, having fallen for them at a show I saw at the Rough Trade shop in Brooklyn during CMJ last year. Charm personified. No Woman is from their debut LP, Light Upon the Lake, which comes out in June. I’ve been lucky enough to hear it and it’s blue-eyed soul heaven."

And here is that track... this is how the story starts, this is how they set the tone. Light Upon The Lake is a damn fine LP of Country influenced, Soul tinged jamz... its going to soundtrack some summers. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
