Country Funk II, a new set of loose-talking, lap steel-twanging tracks.

Back in the mid summer of 2012, the most onomatopoeically titled album you could ever get hold of dropped into our life. Country Funk featured rare cuts by Bob Darin, Gray Fox, Dennis The Fox, Cherokee, Gritz and more; we played it and played it and played it. As the label, Light in the Attic, put it them selves "Country Funk (Volume I) gathered together songs from a genre with no name. It’s a genre created not from geography or shared ideology but a term applied retrospectively based solely on the feel of the songs: hip- swinging rhythms with bourbon on the breath."

It was with utter delight last month that, with as little pre-warning as the first time, Country Funk Volume II 1967-1974 arrived at Drift HQ and it's no exaggeration that it has rarely stopped being played since. Specifically, this new compilation has been in the car and has been played at excessive volumes around the local country lanes.

Parts of the track-listing read through the richest of Country household names; Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Jackie DeShannon, JJ Cale and Bobby Darin. You’ll also be introduced to some more obscure artists like Bill Wilson, whose lost Ever Changing Minstrel album was produced by the feted Dylan producer Bob Johnston, and Thomas Jefferson Kaye, noted producer of Gene Clark’s opus No Other. Gene Clark’s here too, as half of Dillard & Clark, wringing raw emotion from The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down”.

With Glastonbury just in the horizon perhaps the most famous of all the contributors is an exuberant Dolly Parton who's 'Getting Happy' wilfully steals the show hands down. Rich, stompin' good time listening and just gets better with each repeat. A big one for us this summer we're sure.

The CD edition is in the shop now and the deluxe double vinyl will be here very soon. Chances are it'll sell out pretty hard... you get me?
