Best New Reissues: Can, Set Fire To Flames, Vince Guaraldi Trio and David Bowie.

This week’s set have quite a dark energy going on… Mostly.

Hello, Friends.

We are starting the new week off with Can sounding proper full-on, in this meticulously restored recording of their 1976 performance at Cuxhaven. Four instrumental pieces – Eins, Zwei, Drei and Vier - that flow and build to quite incredible effect. Recorded direct to tape, the restoration series was overseen by founding member Irmin Schmidt and producer/engineer René Tinner, who delicately worked on restoring the archival recordings to the best quality for current, modern technology.

+ Pressed on Curacao Blue colour vinyl.

Sings Reign Rebuilder was the stunning 2001 debut LP from Set Fire To Flames - a sprawling, adventurous 13-piece Montreal collective that boasts some seven members of Godspeed you Black Emperor! alongside others from A Silver Mt Zion and Fly Pan Am. Cavernous post rock that clatters like cement and reverbs like the wind. Long improvised sections that never lose their lurking power.

Apparently, it was the sole reason FatCat’s 130701 imprint was founded!

Kevin Rowland was never happy with the final mix of the colossal, breakthrough 1982 Dexys’ album Too-Rye-Ay, despite its huge commercial success. So with Helen O’Hara, and Pete Schwier, he decided to mix it again! To their credit here, Too-Rye-Ay, as it should have sounded, really does sound bigger and brighter. It’s been great to play out in the shop this week either way.

Don’t give us sass, but here’s a little christmassy tone up next quickly, to mark that it’s nearly two months to Christmas. I know, I know, don’t throw snowballs at the messenger. We have two very handsome, special editions of Vince Guaraldi Trio’s evergreen A Charlie Brown Christmas, plus a limited picture disc of The Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack.

We know that you’re cross because we said Christmas, and we know you think you don’t want these, but stop being all like that and just go with it.

Also this week, Soul Jazz reissue the iconic Studio One Women compilation on exclusive Yellow colour vinyl, Sub Pop Records release a fresh 2022 pressing of Damien Jurado’s 1997 Waters Ave. S album and we can point one last time at the National Album Day releases, here.

Lastly this week, October 14th marked the 45th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s iconic Heroes album. His twelfth studio LP and the second of his fabled Berlin trilogy, there is nothing sensible we can add to the culture discourse here… Other than that we really like it and we have a limited Grey colour vinyl pressing in the racks to celebrate.
