Best New Reissues: Kurt Vile, Emeralds and Sea Power.

Maybe it’s the light, but this week’s reissues have us floating out of our seats…

Hello, Friends.

A great way to start this slightly weird and slightly short week with a fresh pressing of Kurt Vile’s expansive fifth LP, Wakin On A Pretty Daze. Originally released back in 2013, it followed his hazy breakout Smoke Ring for My Halo album and is full of long and meandering rock and roll pastoria. Whereas Halo was dense, Daze is full of lightness and sunshine-melancholia. Remains a banger.

+ Pressed on limited Yellow vinyl.

We have an absolute treasure for you this week on Ghostly International, with a reissue of Does It Look Like I'm Here from Cleveland trio Emeralds. The defining moments from the collective powers of John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt and Mark McGuire, with ethereal oscillations and oozing sonic textures that wash over you. The slow builds are really something else, with an amazing meeting point between the analogue arpeggios and McGuire’s signature guitar. This one is pure floats.

+ Available on limited double “Ectomorph” colour vinyl (which looks amazing).

Rough Trade Books

Rough Trade Records have pressed up a handsome new 2023 edition of Sea Power’s Man of Aran, the soundtrack that was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Film Festival to accompany the 1934 documentary. Really stirring stuff, illustrates the emotional intensity they can wield without always being loud.

+ Available on limited Yellow and Blue vinyl.

We did have an Acoustic Sounds series repress of Nina Simone’s Wild Is The Wind, but we played it too much over the weekend and sold them all. She’ll be back in stock this week alongside some other gems that we’ve struggled to get hold of in August. A reminder that you can always hit the “Notify Me When Available” button via the Drift website to be sent a nudge when things arrive back into the building.

Released imminently and just arriving as we type, we have a serious triple set on Numero, with Shira Small’s soft psych, the grooving Mind & Matter and the hardcore Native Nod. All are really excellent and we’ll discuss them more next Monday.

Our good friends at Rough Trade Books have sent us a little catch-up package with some new titles and some essential restocks. You can browse their wares here, and a reminder that they slide beautifully into LP packages.
