Drift Sunday Digest: 10th January 2021

He’s got no style, he’s got no grace. He’s banal and facile, he’s a fat waste of space.

Hello, Friends.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of David Bowie’s death. Five years. Man alive, it feels so much longer... But also like just last week, doesn't it? 2016 at Drift was a period of very small children and very broken sleep. I went to bed at some weird hour having laughed at Marc Riley posting twitter pictures of schoolboy Davie Jones, waking around 5am to Pitchfork re-tweeting Duncan Jones and simply saying... "David Bowie has died". The following day was surreal at Drift, it was just a session of mourning with friends and regulars coming in and volunteering memories. Our good friend Roger brought in his copy of Station To Station and we blasted it. It remains my favourite album since.

To celebrate what would have been the Thin White Duke's 74th birthday, previously unreleased John Lennon and Bob Dylan covers that Bowie recorded back in 1998 have appeared online and will also debut on a 7" single too. You can enjoy both now on Sir David's YouTube channel here.

We've picked a few 'five years' articles and things that we've really enjoyed these last few days.

Naliah Hunder

We are crushing so hard on Nailah Hunter right now. We wrote about her amazing Spells LP this week in the newsletter, and we've been listening back over the last few editions of her superb Astral Garden radio show on NTS. The monthly show summons healing frequencies and spiritual tones that you can float off too, we really highly recommend that you tune in.

The Fall

Much like our Lee, turns out that John Dwyer is a really big fan of The Fall. Just as we were heading home for the week, we heard that his esteemed Castle Face Records will be releasing Live at St. Helens Technical College '81, a brilliantly high-quality desk recording of the band in full flow. We've since found out that our mate Geoff of Static Caravan was not only in attendance, he was also part of the student union booking gigs at the time.

Any of you lot there? Any of you seem them around the same sort of time? Any of you book anything amazing as part of your remit on student union booking teams?

'Leave The Capitol' is streaming over here and sounds amazing. Maybe 2021 is the year that I finally really get into The Fall?

Hoping you all enjoy a restful remainder of Sunday.
