Best New Reissues

Madvillain, Big Thief, Toumani Diabaté, The Lemonheads and ‘The Cobra Label’.

The most iconic duo, Big Thief’s breakout and other excellent not-new sounds.

This Best New Reissues dispatch is very much main evented by a contemporary classic, with a pair of new editions to celebrate the iconic Madvillainy album. The supergroup Madvillain was the combined force of MF DOOM and Madlib and Madvilliany is widely regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. DOOM is in inimitable form with humour and bite, and Madlib’s crate-dug production is just so totally absorbing. Stones Throw have created a new ‘Audiophile’ edition, with upgraded packaging and audiophile sound quality that has been cut at 45rpm by Scott Stratton at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and pressed by Optimal.

To accompany the album, Stones Throw have also made a very first physical pressing of the album’s demos, that famously leaked online before the album dropped in 2004, to huge acclaim. Alongside archival photographs, this Demos LP contains the leaked demo sequence with early vocal cuts from MF DOOM, recorded and quickly mixed in Los Angeles at Madlib's Bomb Shelter studio.

Two utterly essential slices. Quite limited, so shop now whilst we still have a good little wedge.

Big Thief

Big Thief’s 2016 album ‘Masterpiece’ had already put the Brooklyn quartet firmly in the spotlight, but the Capacity album that followed in 2017 really was a breakout moment. Intricate and delicate, but also full of euphoric power and rich folky mystery. Originally released on Saddle Creek, the band and 4AD have made it available again as a limited Eco Colour vinyl pressing.

Also this week; Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan’s recent concrete opus Your Community Hub is back available, including that rather impressive Clear with Cream and Purple Splatter vinyl pressing. African Kora master Toumani Diabaté’s 1988 debut LP - Kaira - gets a new pressing and it really has some sublime air. Krautrock-blazer Känguru from Guru Guru is in the building, but it’s ludicrously limited and we only have a few so we shan’t even bother telling you all how awesome it is. Also in limited quantity is the gorgeous Deluxe Clothbound Edition of The LemonheadsCar Button Cloth on Fire Records. Been enjoying that a lot.

We close out this post in the ever so capable hands of Numero and the latest in the esteemed Eccentric Soul series. The Cobra Label covers “Venomous Tex-Mex R&B and early rock n’ roll from San Antonio’s West Side scene.” If like us that already got you excited, have no fear, it slaps. If that isn’t for you, well, there is an unsubscribe button below…

Just kidding! We’re a broad church over here, but this one really is splendid and pressed on Opaque Gold colour vinyl too.
