Records of the Week: The Orielles, Dungen, Daphni, Alvvays, Sorry, Bonny Light Horseman and Peel Dream Magazine.

Much to fit in, much to celebrate! An excellent new release set to start the month.

Hello, Friends.

In a week absolutely stacked with returns that we’re very excited about, our Record of the Week is Tableau, the return of The Orielles… A return that we’re very excited about! Halifax’s The Orielles’ third studio album (or fourth, depending on how you specifically categorise the excellent La Vita Olistica soundtrack) is self-produced and feels very much like a band that have realised they are limited only by their own imaginations. Flowing freely through genres and styles, it is hugely impressive in its scope. A proper ‘album’ experience of sonics and emotions, really highly recommended.

+ To celebrate the release, the band have made us a Drift exclusive bonus mix CD called "Dedicated to Susumu". 55 absolutely scorching minutes of sonic exploration. We’re including them in all CD and 2LP orders.

Dungen - En Är För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog

It’s a full new set of albums today before you even add Dungen to the mix, the Stockholm princes of psychedelia. Be still, my autumnal, beating heart; En Är För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog (“One is too many and a thousand is never enough”) is the first studio LP in some seven years and it weaves a beautiful and evocative path through the band’s esteemed discography. Swooning orchestrations with coruscating guitar licks like light through smoke. Such a special band.

+ Available on Burgundy colour vinyl.

Dan Snaith (aka Caribou) returns as Daphni with the high energy Cherry, an album rich in vintage house and disco energy. There are some lush sections of sonic meandering, but the way that he controls the pace with the bpms is masterful stuff indeed.

Most Normal is the eagerly anticipated new album from Dublin’s Gilla Band (formerly Girl Band). We’d normally be telling you about them being “post-punks”, but the most striking, most thrilling and most instantly clear thing about Most Normal is that it is a complete deconstruction of their previous work, a gnarled and industrial album of visceral noise. Far from easy going, but it is genuinely thrilling in its unrelenting energy. Amazing stuff.

+ Available on Exclusive Blue colour vinyl.
+ We have very limited copies of the “Eight Fivers” 7” single.
+ Dara from the band has hand-painted us a 1/1 exclusive canvas and we’ll be entering all orders (and preorders) into a draw on Saturday.

Sorry
follow up their brilliant 2020 debut album ‘925’ with the experimental poppin’ Anywhere But Here. Successfully retaining their hand-crafted and home-spun wooze to the production, this new LP is a massive sonic progression. We played it through a few times this week and found a new, different and utterly addictive bit each time, one to really get lost in.

+ Available on Exclusive Transparent Bottle Green colour vinyl.

Toronto-based pop band Alvvays release their third studio LP, Blue Rev and it’s a swooner for sure with guitar hooks throughout. It has the ability to change pace too and the slow builds make the chorus all the more euphoric.

+ Available on Exclusive Crystal Clear colour vinyl.

+ Available on Turquoise colour vinyl.

Super-group trio Bonny Light Horseman - Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats and The Shins, and Josh Kaufman of The National and Hiss Golden Messenger - return on the 37d03d label with Rolling Golden Holy and it really is a warm hug. The delivery is lush,

+ Available on Exclusive Galaxy Blue colour vinyl.

Gilla Band - Most Normal

A little Dinked trio for you, with three very different releases under the ‘D’ badge.

Pad is the new LP from Peel Dream Magazine and brilliantly, it bears very little in common with the scorching Agitprop Alterna that precedes it. Joe Stevens moved from NYC to LA and the driving waves of reverb have almost entirely washed away into sunny Bossa-nova-like pop. His voice sounds lush, the arrangements are smart and free-flowing, it’s just an absolute joy, this one. Very highly recommended indeed.

+ Available as Dinked Edition 215.
+ Available on Exclusive Yellow colour vinyl.

House Without a View is the glimmering new solo LP from Lande Hekt of Muncie Girls. Full of euphoric pop jangle, but there is an addictive and dark underbelly that slowly creeps out of the shadows.

+ Available as Dinked Edition 208.
+ Available on Exclusive Yellow colour vinyl.

Thank you for your patience! We are also delighted to finally bring you diamond horsetail / creeping speedwells from deep tan. This one sold out very hard and very fast (which is apt), so we can’t sell you any, but make sure to lodge the name deep in your brain. Repeat; “deep tan are brilliant.”

DISTRICTS, ROADS, OPEN SPACE is the excellent new set from Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan. The pacing is languorous, hugely evocative and slowly evolving analogue tones. Not many people can make an ode to concrete sound so affecting.

+ Available on Limited Green colour vinyl.

Courtney Marie Andrews
returns with the Sam Evian co-produced Loose Future. Features (amongst others) Grizzly Bear’s Chris Bear on drums and Bonny Light Horseman’s Josh Kaufman on multiple instruments, but it’s Andrews’ lush voice that really shines.

+ Available on Exclusive Red colour vinyl.

Farm To Table is the second studio LP (first with 4AD) from Washington D.C. resident Bartees Strange. A really dynamic set that spends little time concerned with any one grene as it hops about with impressive fluidity. Thoughtful without being directly provocative, a great listen.

+ Available on Exclusive Yellow colour vinyl.

Prism is the really lush debut LP from the all-female discodelic soul band Say She She. Such great energy, it is euphoric without ever feeling like it’s “going for it”.

+ Available on Exclusive Pink Rose colour vinyl.

Into the Blue is the highly-anticipated return of Broken Bells, formed around the duo of the Shins’ James Mercer and producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton/Danger Mouse. Flashes of 60’s pop, 70’s soul and other less vivid colours in between. Cinematic vibes.

+ Available on Exclusive Opaque Purple colour vinyl.

Also this week, Hysteria is the new LP from Australian song-writer, Indigo Sparke. Okkervil River's Will Sheff releases Nothing Special, the first album under his own name. Everything is Going to Be Alright is the lush new set from cult New Zealand producer Princess Chelsea. We have the vinyl format of Action Bronson’s killer Cocodrillo Turbo album. Under The Midnight Sun is the eagerly anticipated new studio LP from rock band The Cult. Glasgow’s Cloth release the Low Sun EP via Rock Action. We have Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet from Disq. Galaxy Heart is the striking new set from Montréal composer-violinist (and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra member) Jessica Moss. Daniela Lalita releases her debut EP Trececerotres on Young. Bellevue is the untethered new album from Woodstock, NY based punks The Bobby Lees. V O R T E X is the debut album on Brainfeeder from celebrated filmmaker Terence Etc.

Lastly, Pieces Of Driftwood is a collection of non-album singles, tracks recorded for compilations and new material from New Zealand-based singer songwriter Maxine Funke on the Disciples label.

Below, a playlist to guide you through these bountiful new sounds!
