January is growing a pace with an excellent set of new additions for your stereo. Plenty of our chit-chat, then you do the picking, okay?

Hello, Friends.

Record of the Week is a MIGHTY return from the Atlanta-formed Algiers with There Is No Year. They have always been intense, but this new release is pure fire, expanding upon the doom-laden soul of their foundation with gestures from industrial, post-punk and soul. Lyrically and thematically it's intense, positively soaked in political turmoil. Urgent and really arresting stuff.

This morning, we have just made the last few copies of our Dinked Edition (No. 34) available in the shop and online.

+ Ultra-limited edition Dinked exclusive, only 500 copies pressed
+ Mirriboard sleeve with reversed colours
+ Gold coloured vinyl
+ Exclusive bonus 7” featuring ‘Void’ and ‘Can The Sub_Bass Speak?’
+ Hand-numbered

Keeley Forsyth's debut Debris is utterly brilliant, minimal, beautiful and intense music. Born and raised in Oldham, Forsyth first made her name as an actor, but while the creation of music has been a constant feature in her life, she’s taken the long road to its release. Another very highly recommended release on the Leaf Label, make sure to dedicate some time to this, it is full of black magic.

+ Limited Indies only edition LP on Gold vinyl

Delighted to have Holy Fuck return this week with their new LP Deleter, and they really have gone through metamorphosis. Featuring guest performances from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Angus Andrew of Liars and Nick Allbrook from Pond, Deleter really does have a hell of a lot in the mix across it's nine tracks. Kraut-rock drives, plenty of wooze and some really primal beats that are more deep house that the experimental clunks you might have been expecting. Same energy but some thrilling new tones, really great this.

Iconic singer and writer Bill Fay returns with the third album in the celebrated second phase of his recording career. Countless Branches is a really beautiful collection, very intimate and stripped back to the barest bones. Some of these songs have been gently developing for thirty to forty years and presenting them so simply is really stunning.

+ Deluxe edition 2LP set includes two exclusive tracks + a reworking of Don’t Let My Marigolds Die.

Hard Times is the new LP from Whyte Horses and it sounds absolutely fantastic. Guest appearances from La Roux, John Grant, Badly Drawn Boy, Traceyanne Campbell, Gruff Rhys and more, a rich and vivid adventure in analogue sounds. Really cool, played it a few times back to back and it flies past in a heartbeat. Dead cool.

A huge return from Bombay Bicycle Club with Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the number 1-charting, Mercury Music Prize-nominated So Long, See You Tomorrow back in 2014. Lush production, big rich sounds.

+ Deluxe edition LP is a double LP, cut at 45 rpm, with printed inner sleeves and a gatefold cover.

The Innocence Mission - one of the very most best-kept secrets - release See You Tomorrow on Bella Union this week. The Pennsylvania band have been creating beautiful, fragile and quite majestic folk and dream-pop. This is so beautiful.

+ This first press LP format is on orange vinyl and includes download code.

Austin's excellent And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead release X: The Godless Void and Other Stories. Dense, noisy, orchestral and heavy, it's quite a treat.

+ Limited Edition LP is on Clear vinyl and includes a CD.

Courteeners return with their long awaited sixth album More. Again. Forever. on Ignition Records.

+ Available as an indie exclusive edition on clear vinyl with alt sleeve artwork.

Last new release this week is Marigold from Pinegrove on Rough Trade. A wistful and mournful set of songs that fall somewhere between 90s alt rock and modern country. Above all else really has its own character. Introspective, but also heartwarming in places.

+ Indies Only vinyl is marigold yellow

Squid at Drift

Huge reissue from the 4AD vaults this week, with a 30th Anniversary Remaster of Pale Saints The Comforts Of Madness. With tones in both noise and dream-pop, it's one of the finest of that era, included in Pitchfork's Best 50 Shoegaze Albums Of All Time list and often cited as a big influence. As part of the reappraisal, both the deluxe double CD & LP formats include unreleased demos and a 1989 John Peel Session.

+ Limited Indie edition double LP is pressed on clear vinyl.

Thrill Jockey have made the self-titled Lightning Bolt LP on double vinyl for the first time! Includes two tracks never-before on LP, Zone and And Beyond. Hand screen-printed wrap designed by Brian Chippendale and printed by Crosshair. Talking of Brian, you all saw that he has collaborated with Ty Segall right?!?

Also on the Thrill Jockey, a repressing of the excellent Rose City Band self-titled LP from last year. Produced and recorded by Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips) in Portland, and mixed by Chris Cohen. Very limited transparent red colour vinyl repress, be quick!

David Byrne's American Utopia on Broadway [Original Cast Recording Live] has arrived on vinyl and is on the racks.

Lastly this week, an absolute 100% gold certified Drift essential purchase™... The ferocious Squid Town Centre EP on Speedy Wunderground gets a limited repress. You all know how wild we are about these guys, they will be joining us at Sea Change in May and it's going to be one of those nights! We can honestly say that it's one of the most thrilling debut releases we've heard in years and these guys are going to absolutely destroy 2020. Don't miss out on this.

What a week, what a set.
