ROTW: The Cinematic Orchestra, Daniel Thorne, The Comet Is Coming and Stephen Malkmus

What an extraordinary week, honestly can't remember one where we've adored so many things right off the shelf.

Hello, Friends.

Honestly what a week. First of all, four very different releases we think the world of.

Record of the Month for March 2019 is To Believe from The Cinematic Orchestra. It's a huge return featuring guest appearances from Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel and Grey Reverend. It has a load of different tones and textures but is held together brilliantly as a whole. Subtle, slow builds and the best orchestral flourishes.

+ Designed by The Designers Republic, we have a deluxe Edition 2LP pressed on 180g clear vinyl and 180g white vinyl. Housed in roughboard sleeve with black foil detail and glossy printed inners. Won't touch the sides!

Record of the Week is a real beauty. Erased Tapes presents the invigorating and powerful debut solo album Lines of Sight by Australian-born, Liverpool-based composer, saxophonist and founder of Immix Ensemble, Daniel ThorneLines of Sight is powerful, special, cosmic music. It is full of otherworldly beauty and every gesture feels both deeply considered but gloriously organic. Very smart music made by smart people with tons of emotion.

Very highly recommended indeed

Could this possibly be the most Drift suitable album that has ever happened?! Groove Denied is the secret electronic album (✓) that Stephen Malkmus (✓) of Pavement (✓) has been telling everyone about, and is finally seeing the light of day. (✓) Call off the search, we found it! No gimmicks, it is just an artist using a different set of tools (Malkmus commented "It’s fun to mess with things that you’re not supposed to."). Channeling DIY Human League vibes, we're so into this!

+ Indies exclusive LP is on clear vinyl.

Deep breathes now.... The Comet Is Coming. And how.

The Mercury Music Prize-shortlisted futurist jazz voyagers (one of the most vital and progressive UK bands around) return with Trust In The Life Force Of The Deep Mystery and it is nothing short of stunning. There are sections of crunching beats and synths with Shabaka's sax in driving force, then there are moments of spiritual exploration and serenity, with the sax taking long searching journeys. That's not to say that Danalogue and Betamax are simply a rhythm section. They have created complex and minimal soundscapes that work beautifully with King Shabaka that really go somewhere special.

An instant classic and an album that we will be revisiting all year and beyond.

Roll on the Comet, roll on the Spring, roll on Sea Change.

Cinematic Orchestra

Japanese four-piece Chai may worship at the altar of kawaii - their homeland’s culture of cute - but their debut LP Punk is such a thriller! Sharp toothed pop bangers with proper punk character.

+ First pressing will be on White vinyl, but due early May. CD is out now.

Dwight Trible, the godfather of the LA sound, and possibly the world’s greatest living jazz vocalist, returns with Mothership, a double album of spiritual jazz, soul, gospel, and psychedelic rock. It is so out there. Recorded at LA’s Sunset Sound, he is backed by a band of legendary musicians (including Kamasi Washington) and it's a real joy.

+ Indie shop version (due mid April) is limited to just 500 copies and is pressed in a 'Cosmic Vinyl' colour-way.

A couple of right Indie icons - Karen O and Danger Mouse - collaborate to release their debut album as a duo, Lux Prima. The epic self titled opening track is worth the fee alone, rich and warm, blissful cinematics. Karen O is less yelping than in YYYs and she is a brilliant central character here. It's all wonderfully produced, sounds like a million quid.

+ Our Indie Version is pressed on limited edition red vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with a poster and a download code. Limited to just 1500 Copies.

Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just 7 months after their last one. Self-titled, it's about the most BJM sounding thing we've ever heard... and we mean that as high praise!

+ Pressed on on 180gm clear vinyl LP.

A double helping on Thrill Jockey today with a couple of really sick new releases. The incomparable duo, Matmos, have done it again, their new album, Plastic Anniversary, was created using only plastic. Utterly amazing noises and bizarrely captivating. And then WAAAYYY over there, we have Chicago’s Oozing Wound in pounding form. High Anxiety is full of ferocious energy and perhaps the most compact (and funny!) they have been to date.

+ Matmos limited indie version pressed on 'teal mashup' coloured vinyl.
+ Oozing Wound limited Indie version pressed on 'nuclear waste green' coloured vinyl.

Also new this week we have a handful of copies of the MEGA limited Peter Broderick & Friends Play Arthur Russell LP in stock too. Do not blink on these. The Faint return with pounding electronic shapes on Egowerk and the magnificent Art Of The Memory Palace return on Static Caravan.

Stephen Malkmus

Another New Order 12" reissue with Everything's Gone Green getting a repress after it's original 1981 release on Factory Benelux. Pretty sure it's black vinyl which is the biggest misstep of the year so far....

Pretty essential reissue this week with The Jungle Brothers' debut Straight Out The Junglegetting a heavy new edition. We got it like how? Been playing this loads already this week.

Lastly this week, Beggars Arkive release the long-awaited reissue of The Fall's ninth studio album, Bend Sinister, originally released in 1986. This edition is titled 'Bend Sinister/The 'Domesday' Pay-Off Triad-Plus'! and has been newly transferred from analogue tapes.

In case you missed it on the socials, Fire In the Hole is the long-awaited follow up to Black Peaches' critically acclaimed 2016 debut 'Get Down You Dirty Rascals' and we're hyped to have it coming as a Dinked Edition!

+ Pressed on Teal Vinyl
+ Numbered edition of just 350
+ Signed Art Print 11” x 11”
+ Bonus 7” with two exclusive tracks for Dinked that will never be repressed
+ Card with Download Codes

These are flying out, so please don't go missing out now!
