Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Nubya Garcia, The Lemon Twigs, Bright Eyes, Girl Friday and H.C.McEntire.

We have much to tell you. It's another one of those big old weeks.

Hello, Friends.

A very full week of new stuff on the racks as of tomorrow morning. Our Record of the Week is the exceptional full debut album from saxophonist Nubya GarciaSource is all about Nubya as the band leader, taking her band and collaborators on a vivid and diverse sonic journey. Hot calypso and dancehall influences in the mix, it coherently pulls in a lot of tones and is thrilling throughout. Very highly recommended indeed.

+ Indie Version LP is pressed on coloured vinyl; split clear and turquoise blue with yellow splatter, limited to just 1000 copies.

The D’Addario brothers return with their third Lemon Twigs album, Songs For The General Public. Massively accomplished writers, performers and observers, this new LP is such a riot. Warmly vintage stylings without needless retro postures. The harmonies and instrumentation are just stacked in ever-escalating ways, it's absolutely joyous. We LOVE this band.

+ Indie shop version is pressed on limited red coloured vinyl. A One-and-done-run.

Another huge return this week with Bright Eyes releasing Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, their first new LP in a decade. Gladly, they still very much sound like themselves on that point of euphoria and melancholy. They do, however, sound rejuvenated and sort-of comfortable in their sound. A really strong set of songs that all sit together beautifully.

Available on;

+ Transparent Red / Transparent Orange vinyl
+ Transparent Blue / Transparent Red vinyl (UK Indie shops exclusive)

+ All double LP packaging features die-cut jacket and Side 4 phenakistoscope etching!

Girl Friday - Androgynous Mary

Friday is a DOUBLE DINKED FRIDAY, with new releases from Girl Friday and H.C.McEntire.

Androgynous Mary is the debut LP from The LA-based post-punks Girl Friday.

+ Dinked Edition Number 54
+ Exclusive Pink/White vinyl
+ Hand-numbered edition of 350
+ Exclusive Obi Strip
+ Signed band photo

It casts some pretty heavy shadows with flashes of noise rock against the ferocious riffs and tight vocals. Great stuff, this.

Narratively, H.C. McEntire’s Eno Axis is about finding direction in the natural world and following love. Recorded very much with a live feel, the songs are inspired by the colours and tones of open tunings, which offer up some lush drones.

+ Dinked Edition Number 57
+ Exclusive iridescent blue vinyl
+ 12” x 12” screen-printed, two-colour print
+ Signed & numbered
+ Numbered edition of 300

We thought it had a hot summer night vibe, but it might actually have a lush autumnal hum... Maybe both? It's really good.

Last few Dinked Editions on both are online now: www.driftrecords.com/collections/dinked-editions

H.C.McEntire Eno Axis

Morning & Melancholia EP is the debut of Le Ren on Secretly Canadian... Remember the name. She has a really stunning voice and there is something absolutely epic about these quiet and simple songs, really excellent stuff. Our indie version is pressed on limited white coloured vinyl and numbered individually.

Sugaregg is the utterly euphoric return of Bully on Sub Pop. We have a loser edition on transparent red vinyl.

The Neon is the 18th studio album from Erasure. We have limited edition records on neon orange vinyl that also include high definition audio download codes.

Grand Plan is Dan Croll's new album and chronicles his journey of discovery out to LA. Some lush production and some really great songs here too.

You heard us right... Dylan Baldi and Jayson Gerycz of Cloud Nothings are dropping a freeform jazz album called Blessed Repair... And it's tight!

Therapy With Colour is the Constellation debut by Montréal-based producer and sound artist T. Gowdy. Looking forward to playing this late and loud.

So how about this, ALPHABETLAND is the first new LP from landmark Los Angeles punk band X, featuring all four original members since 1985. Indies Only Edition on Blue Vinyl.

Also this week; No Joy return with Motherhood (on neon violet coloured vinyl), Callum Easter releases Green Door Sessions via Moshi Moshi (on blue vinyl), J. Zunz releases Hibiscus via Rocket Recordings (also on blue vinyl), Liar, Flower is the reincarnation of Ruby Throat and they release Geiger CounterFreeze, Melt is the sixth album from the Grammy-nominated Australians Cut Copy (on red vinyl) and we also have limited copies of The Waterboys new studio album Good Luck, Seeker.

The Cardboard King

Another volley of essential PJ Harvey reissues this week, with her stunning debut LP Rid Of Me and the associated demos as a standalone release. The reissue is faithful to the original recording and package, cutting by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering under the guidance of Steve Albini.

+ Little bit of admin: stock will be landing with us on Friday morning and shipping then. Our preorders will be going out the door ASAP.

A killer reissue of Brian Eno & John Cale's collaborative Wrong Way Up. Truly has one of the worst sleeves ever (which has been lovingly restored), but sounds fantastic. We also have the collaborative forces of Brian Eno & Jah Wobble with Spinner (much better sleeve). All Saints have done a superb job on these, they sound lush.

We have a 180 gram black vinyl pressing (in a tip-on sleeve) of Workingman’s Dead following the limited CD and picture sleeved editions a few weeks back.

Beggars Arkive reissue Freeez & John Rocca's Southern Freeez / Variations On A Theeem on double LP on Blue Marbled + Transparent Splatter vinyl. Been playing this loads, so many weird funk routes, it's fantastic.

Matador's "Revisionist History" series continues in fine form with Pavement's Sensitive Man on a totally brilliant shaped picture disc. They are really limited, but as we're utter Pavement nutters we went deep and can gladly put more online now. Also released is Guided By Voices' Alien Lanes, but afraid that one well and truly sold out on preorder. We do however have one copy that we're going to give away, so keep an eye on our Instagram for a special Matador prize.

As you can see, King Cardboard is keeping busy with all the RSD stock arriving. We wrote a little guide about how we're going to run things next weekend, we'll update this with any further info.
