Records of the Week

Records of the Week: Adrianne Lenker, Fuzz, This is the Kit, Actress, Skullcrusher, Laura Veirs, Songhoy Blues and Bruce Springsteen.

Today, we have much for you. Don't we always though?

Hello, Friends.

songs and instrumentals is a double solo set from Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker. Two distinct collections, both written and recorded in April after Big Thief’s March tour was abruptly cut short due to coronavirus. She really does have an incredible voice and these are quiet but powerful songs. Our Record of the Week sounds incredible, the recording is 100% analog-analog-analog (AAA), no digital process was used in the production of this sound recording and it is a pure mood.

+ Whilst stock last, we have some absolutely beautiful, double-sided 12x12 prints to give away with preorders of the LP format.

Another big return this week is Off Off On, the deliciously knitted and hypnotic new set from This Is The Kit. It is beautifully constructed and recorded, suitably DIY with clunks and breaths, but also really quite discombobulating in its tapestry of tones. Quite the treat.

+ Limited edition red vinyl available while stocks last.
+ Order the record this week and be in with a chance of winning a test pressing and lyric sheet handwritten by Kate herself. More info here.

Fuzz, the supergroup of all supergroups, return with their gnarly, driving and totally lush third LP on In The Red. Can't stop laughing about how utterly amazing this LP is. Any time of day, any time of night, it's pure riffs, hooks and a good time call-to-arms. Charles Moothart, Ty Segall and Chad Ubovich have fully hit their stride and this third LP is 100% all killer, no filler.

We honestly can't think of anything that will get played more than this all year. Amazing stuff.

+ Act quick, very limited indie shop edition on Blue colour vinyl.
+ Keep an eye on the Drift site and socials, we'll have Fuzz One and Two landing this week and they might well look kinda special!

 Records of the Week

Karma & Desire is the massive new LP from Actress. Darren Jordan Cunningham returns on Ninja Tune with some killer guest appearances, including a couple of tracks with Sampha. Production is so tight here, amazing beat-making as ever.

+ Indie-only edition: 12” Silver foil metallic bag with black print. 12” 140g Crystal Clear vinyl. It just looks incredible, huge shout out to the team making this one.

Ignore the brutal name, Skullcrusher is delicately weaved webs and the first appearance of a very exciting new voice. Helen Ballentine offers an airy, intense, and unflinchingly open collection of songs and we have them on two limited pressings; either limited picture disc or transparent cloudy clear vinyl.

Laura Veirs returns for her eleventh solo album My Echo, on Bella Union. The album features guest appearances from Jim James, Bill Frisell, Karl Blau, Matt Ward and others, but it really is all about Laura's smart words and quite stunning voice.

+ Indie shop version is pressed on limited transparent pink coloured vinyl. We also have some lush Songbook zines with lyrics and chords plus signed postcards to give away, while stocks last.

Human hero man William Basinski makes his first appearance of 2020* in collaborative form as Sparkle Division with To Feel Embraced. A vibrant electronic fusion of lounge, jazz, and disco, it has all the Twin Peaks hallmarks right here.

+ Limited Indie shop version LP is pressed on 'Honeysuckle' coloured vinyl.

* William Basinski's forthcoming (and amazing) Lamentations LP has been delayed, now due early January, so you know.

Songhoy Blues make a welcome return with Optimisme to bring the Malian shimmer to guitar music, harder-rocking this time but still the same Songhoy sweetness.

+ Limited Indie shop version LP is pressed on gold coloured vinyl.

Monument is an album of heavy tones and high hopes. Keaton Henson really does sound quite amazing here. It can well be argued that no one has got as close to recording heartbreak as Keaton has here. Far from easy going, but quite the marvel.

+ LP is a double white vinyl gatefold, on reverse board, CD has a foldout poster in it.
+ Next few LP orders get a signed print and a tote bag too.

Keaton Henson Monument

The Mountain Goats are in superb form on Getting Into Knives, their 19th studio album. They have always managed to capture that sweet spot between keen observation and surreal humour.

+ Indies-only LP is on metallic gold vinyl in gatefold sleeve and download.

After a six-plus-years hiatus, Magik Markers return on Drag City with 2020. Explosive and searching experimental music, plenty of thrills and remains firmly DIY. Great stuff.

House Gospel Choir is an electrifying House-meets-Gospel experience that never fails to get audiences clapping, dancing and singing along. Re//Choired is big time euphoria right here. If we had loads of you in the building and pumped this on the stereo, you'd all buy at least one copy.

Acts of Rebellion is the debut album from Colombian musician Ela Minus. Dreamy, pounding, minute and epic, this really is a trip.

+ Limited Indie shop version LP is pressed on silver coloured vinyl.

Weird Feelings is the debut LP from the gnarled Leeds based supergroup Magick Mountain. This one is riotous, got some serious riffs.

+ Limited and exclusive LP on "Splendid Splatter" Vinyl.

Letter To You is Bruce Springsteen’s new studio album of brand-new material, playing with the E Street Band and is a rock album fuelled by the band's heart-stopping, house-rocking signature sound.

He hasn't sounded this Springsteen-esque in years, it's an album about a forgotten America.

+ Limited, Indie shop-only version double LP is pressed on 'snowcloud grey' vinyl. Side A is etched and the discs are slipped into transparent inner sleeves. Includes a 16 page, 12x12" booklet and the package is all housed in a gatefold sleeve.

Also this week, Blossoms release a Live From The Plaza Theatre album. British stadium-slayers Faithless return with All Blessed, featuring Damien Jurado, Gaika and more. John Frusciante releases Maya, the first instrumental electronic album under his own name on Aaron Funk's Timesig label. Breezy Mod vibes from The Moons with the Pocket Melodies, includes a limited Indie shop version pressed on purple coloured vinyl.

Gorillaz return with Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez, a star-studded new LP of collaborations. We have just loaded up our last copies of the limited indie exclusive Neon Orange vinyl edition. Tell you what, they just do not look like they have aged at all in twenty years you know!

Working Men's Club's Valleys [12"] is in the house and sounding fine. Inspired us to put the LP on loud af this morning, a thrilling start to a Thursday, we tell you what. Limited these, when they're gone, they're gone!

Falkirk’s finest, Arab Strap drop a NEW 7" single on Rock Action this week but we are currently sold out. More soon.

Few bits still due on the schedule for this week that we're expecting to land with us shortly. We'll talk more about them all on the socials over the weekend as all four are top. Empty is the physical release for the eight - stunning - solo piano pieces that Nils Frahm released to celebrate Piano Day. Loma return to Sub Pop with Don't Shy Away and man, is this one full to the brim, so many tones, including Brian of Eno at the end. The incomparable and utterly thrilling clipping. return with Visions of Bodies Being Burned (we have gold tooth coloured vinyl). Lastly a 25th Anniversary Edition of Chavez's Gone Glimmering, an unsung classic reissued and sounding utterly superb.

What'cha what'cha what'cha want? All of the shout-along Beastie Boys hits in one package? Ch-Check it out! Beastie Boys Music on CD and double LP.

We have an essential and limited repress of Porridge Radio's excellent and utterly vital debut Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers.

Heads up, Dead-heads! Don't sleep on this one, we have Ken Kesey’s Ultra Rare 1966 studio recording of the Acid Test with The Grateful Dead pressed on transparent 'highlighter yellow'.

Lastly this week, the esteemed Honest Jon's turn their attention to Savoy, surely the mightiest Gospel label of them all. These compilations are pure magic, stomping, rollicking gospel music, intermingling with raw soul, searing blues, hard-rocking doo-wop, jazz, storming R&B, fierce funk, rapturous soul and even transcendent disco. Highly recommended these, they are a pretty-much essential addition to any record rack if you ask us.
