Prize is the mesmerising new set from Rozi Plain and her wide network of guest contributors. We asked her a few questions about making a beautiful haze and also candlesticks.

Drift: Thanks for working with us again on a custom Dinked Edition, we love our bespoke sleeve art. Tell us more about it, did you find the image?

Rozi: I'm not sure what they are. I guess probably vases because the hole looks a bit big for candles? I found a nice book in a charity shop about glass in Bangor in Wales and had cut this picture out cuz I just found it such a satisfying and beautiful image. I actually had a really interesting adventure working out if I was able to use the image and managed to track it down to a publisher in Norway who gave me permission and said they couldn't find out much about the image but thought they were probable from 1850. It's really thrilling that you are just able to get in touch with people and ask about this stuff.

D: Why did they resonate with you?

RP: I just found it a really compelling and somehow deep image. I love the red. I love the two. I just always want to keep looking at it.

D: Staying on artwork, how nervous were you about signing off the artwork on the wall planner? It's not a leap year is it?!

RP: Well after the DEBACLE of 2022 (I got the days of the week wrong in half of May and ALL of September - I put this down to having Covid when I was filling in the details - I was so insanely mortified about it - I emailed a correction sheet you could print out and stick on to everyone who bought it) yes, I was nervous about signing of on it.

BUT I did make sure it was RIGOROUSLY checked by some reliable sources...

Don’t ask Rozi Plain to explain her spellbinding fifth album Prize. Its ten, magical tracks exist as if in another realm, where feelings matter more than meanings, where thoughts have room to roam and where you can live in the moment for as long as you like.

Rozi’s signature, free-floating sound was set with her 2015 breakthrough Friend and cemented with 2019’s globally adored What A Boost (‘Like slipping between cotton sheets’ was Pitchfork’s description). Prize builds on both, but takes its cues from elsewhere. By a stretch, it’s Rozi’s most upbeat and daring album to date.

References to disco and rave, saxophone treated to sound like strings, silly synths and harp all play a part. Economy is key – every sound has an impact out of proportion to its size, every texture pays dividends. Rozi’s bewitching vocals are bolder and brighter than ever before. Male and female backing vocals feel like friends dropping by.

Begun pre-pandemic and composed and recorded everywhere from Glasgow and the Isle of Eigg to a seaside village in French Basque Country, Margate and London’s legendary Total Refreshment Centre, Prize may sound effortless but creating each song was as industry intensive as spinning a spider’s web.

A cast of 15 feature, including Kate Stables, with whom Rozi has toured for the past decade in This Is The Kit, contemporary jazz titan Alabaster De Plume, Danalogue, Serafina Steer, Yoshino Shigihara (Yama Warashi) and Minneapolis based saxophonist Cole Pulice.

D: 'Prize' is positively stacked with guest contributors. Was this the first time you worked with any of them or are they all part of your crew? Do any have any secret skills that benefited the recording?

RP: Well some of them it was the first time I had recorded with although I had played with them before. James Howard added lots of extra guitar parts at literally the eleventh hour - more like the 11:55 hour but it really lifted up the whole record. It was the first time I worked with Susumu Mukai, he played the bass on Spot Thirteen and Blink and Emma Smith added strings on Sore. I find it nerve wracking asking but thrilling playing with new people.

D: What were the biggest sonic surprises when making the record?

RP: Gerard had got this new synthesizer called a Hydransynth and it did some really bonkers surprising things - that was probably the man of the match!

"I love Elephant Records in Winchester, my home town, and I like to go in there when I'm back. Just a really brilliant interesting selection and feels somehow surprising to have a place like this in Winchester - no offense Winchester, I love you."

D: To that end, does the album broadly sound as you intended when you set about recording it or was the process a lot more organic?

RP: Well, I feel like it's always a surprise how things turn out although I didn't totally know how I meant it to be in the first place. But the biggest thrill of making a record is finding out how it sounds by making it!

D: You're going to be playing a set of instore shows to launch the album, where do you expect to first see your album on the wall and how do you expect that to feel (even though this isn't your first rodeo!)?

RP: Hmm, well I hope it's going to be on the wall of all the record shops we play in!! My friend Luke also has a floating record shop on his boat called The Record Deck and I like to think of it being there!!
